FUN LIFE-LONG LEARNING!
So many books and so little time! Blinks are a distillation of the key points of thousands of non-fiction books. The Cliffs Notes of Cliff Notes! The Blinks are produced by a team of editors who identify the key take-aways from each book that you can read on your SmartPhone, tablet, or computer. Many of the blinks are available as audio blinks — so again, you can read or listen to the blinks while you are waiting for an appointment or walking the dog.
I subscribed to the Premium version. I like the fact that I can catch up with my “reading” by getting the gist of the book in the key points and being able to use that information right away. I can then buy the book if I want to get all the details behind the Blinks.
You know, I thought I would never give up my hardcover or paperback books! Well, I still love the feel of a book in my hand, but what I HAVE given up is lugging my books with me when I’m traveling, consulting, or just getting away for a weekend. You will LOVE the freedom of carrying your favorite books with you without the weight or inconvenience of multiple books. I always look for a Kindle Store version when I’m buying a new book, now!
Oh, and you don’t need to have a Kindle device to use the app. I can access my Kindle book versions on my phone, tablet, or computer. Such a timesaver (and back saver!).
Assess Your Productivity
Rated as a top time management app, Rescue Time records the amount of time you spend on different types of websites from business to communications to entertainment.
Easy to understand analytic tools help you monitor the amount of time you spend on “unproductive” websites, as defined by you, so you can make changes in your computer behavior as needed! There are a variety of plans to choose from free to Pro.
Pomodoro Time Apps
I talked about the Pomodoro Technique(R) in the blog post on productivity strategies. I use the Focus Keeper app from the App Store. There is a free and a paid version for the iPhone and iPad. Right now the free version works fine for me. You can search on pomodoro alternatives for the Android.

NURSING & EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
Nursing Text Booksellers
As a nursing educator, I have relied on Lippincott Williams & Wilkins textbooks and Journals (e.g., Nursing2017, Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, Nurse Educator, JONA) for my students in my courses for nursing education, clinical nurse specialist education, evidence-based practice, change leadership, nursing research, and acute and critical care nursing.
Save 50% on JONA, Journal of Nursing Administration only at LWW.com.
Their Incredibly … series and Nursing Know-How handbooks are popular with students and practicing nurses. You can get 10% of handbooks now – click: 10% Off Handbooks at Shop.lww.com. And as a CNS, I definitely have a subscription to the Clinical Nurse Specialist journal (I also edit the Educator’s Corner in that journal!).
Here are some of my favorite texts and journals:
I also use Springer textbooks for my nursing classes.
Springer Publishing Company (See below for Discount promo code!)
Springer is offering my readers a 10% discount on the list price of ANY books purchased when you place an order on their website using the following promo code SS10CJT. You must use the promo code in order to receive the discount. The best part is that you can use this promo code each time you go to the website — there’s no limit!

University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN is a Magnet® hospital so designated for outstanding patient care and nursing excellence. The recognition is the highest honor that a hospital can receive for nursing care. I’ve had the pleasure of consulting with the CNSs here – and this is where I’d work if I lived in the Knoxville area!
University of Colorado Colorado Springs
Excellent nursing programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Fully online RN-BSN, master’s, and DNP programs. Click on the College link for more information.
Colorado Technical University offers both campus-based and online nursing degree options. CTU’s mission is to provide higher education to students through innovative technology and an experienced faculty, enabling the pursuit of professional goals.
I have reviewed their website and curriculum and the courses reflect current issues and core concepts important to professional nurses of the future. “The RN to BSN degree completion program at Colorado Technical University is designed to help nurses prepare and develop the knowledge and skills needed to help expand their practice options for a variety of clinical and administrative leadership activities and to manage change in an increasingly complex and diverse environment.”
The RN-BSN/MSN program is accredited, but their MSN programs are still under review. In good conscience, I can’t yet recommend any nursing program that is not accredited so I won’t give you a link to the MSN programs until they tell me it has received accreditation.
Clinical Nurse Specialist Review Course
AACN Press Release: ACCNS-AG Review Course, March 11, 2014, “Online course helps clinical nurse specialists prepare for ACCNS-AG certification exam”
I was the Lead Subject Matter Expert for this new CNS certification practice exam offered by AACN for adult-gerontology acute care clinical nurse specialists! I chose the CNS experts featured in this product to help you prepare for the ACCNS-AG certification exam.
