ANA 2017 Year of the Healthy Nurse

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major issue in our country, with close to 86 million Americans suffering from some type of CVD (AHA, 2017). How are we doing with our cardiovascular health as nurses? According to ANA’s health risk appraisal, we could be doing much better. Twenty-five percent of respondents suffer from hypertension, 6 percent smoke, only about one-third eat the daily recommended amount of whole grains, only 16 percent eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, and only about half regularly perform the recommended strengthening and aerobic exercises (ANA & ICG, 2016). The average BMI of respondents is 27.6, which is in the overweight range (ANA & ICG, 2016). We have some work to do in 2017—now is the time to improve these statistics for ourselves, our patients, and our families!
